When Rains Bring Rainbows

Grey skies swirling,
mind mixed with images like clouds in a swirling sky.
Senses disappearing like the sun behind the clouds;
it begins to rain.

Grey skies turn black,
the dry ground wet from the rain.
The waters are rising,
it begins to flood.

Beneath the surface,
the soothing quietness bringing stillness.
Eyes open,
the mind begins to shut.

Rain-pelted surface,
the ripples distorting the images.
A hand breaks through,
disturbing the quietness, the stillness.

A sun, warm and bright,
rainbows in the rain.
Eyes closed,
the mind begins to open.

Never, ever, underestimate the cycle of depression.  Sometimes it last mere moments. Other times, much longer.  Sometimes it sneaks up on you. Other times, it hits you like a freight train.

Never, ever, underestimate the hand of God.  Sometimes it merely holds you. Other times, it reaches right down and grabs you.

Never, ever, underestimate the promises of God.  Sometimes they seem distant, directed at someone else.  Other times, fulfilled before your very eyes.

  1. ATWB,
    Glad you liked.

For me, that phrase speaks to how distorted things become when succumbing to the emotional turmoil brewing inside. You can't discern good from bad, right from wrong, everything is distorted.

I'm thankful God determines to break the surface, get beneath it, reach us where we need to be reached.

Wow...very impressive. Amazing how you can take words and make them capture our imagination. I thought about the line "rain-pelted surface, the ripples distorting the images". Just imagining that...brought so many thoughts to mind! " Am I looking at myself, or just the image that is reflected in the water? With each drop...the image becomes more distorted...is that what happens in my life?
    Great work Cornelius!

  4. Nice poem. Depression is not fun, and should be a more serious topic within the church.

  5. I agree. Given the number of people that suffer depression, it ought to be some sort of focal point for ministry.
